Double Page Spread Draft

Here is the first draft of the double page spread. I decided to put lines in between the paragraphs to help readers follow the article. I have also added a line in the middle to differentiate the two pages

DOLBY

Good to see some drafts here Jamie. I think the font choices and colour schemes as well as images give a clear sense of genre and purpose. I would look at: making the font for straplines easier to read, Making the quality (lighting in particular) of the images better- they are grainy and could be higher spec; the masthead is taking up too much room- I would make the name of the mag on one line only as is the convention.

Contents Page Plan

Here are a few ideas for the layout of my contents page. There aren't very many layouts as I think I have my mind set on the first idea.

Front Cover Plan

Here are some of the ideas that I have had about the layout of my Front cover. I am going to try each layout and see if there are any variations of it that may also work. I may end up using different aspects of the layouts in one and see how that works.

Progress Update

For the last week I have been working on the front cover of my magazine. I have been experimenting with a few fonts and layouts of the cover and I am getting close to a layout I like. I haven't yet taken any photos but I am at the point where I can and I know how it should look when they are done.

Music Magazine Research

Here is some research that I conducted in context to the sales of certain music magazines in 2015

Metal Hammer Analysis

Here is the analysis for another music magazine, 'Metal Hammer'. I have looked for the conventions as I did with my Kerrang! analysis. this is more focused on the genre I have chosen to look at which is Metal.

Logo for my Mag Progress

Here is the examples of the Logo I will use for my Magazine. It will be titled Metal Pick as shown and from asking some people many liked the second of the 4 fonts I chose. I will take this into consideration and will most likely use this font for the Magazine. I created this logo myself. I cut the pick out myself and took a stock image of the devil horns outline and manipulated it to make it look like it has been engraved into the pick. I then went through some font choices and transformations. I went with this semi arch writing because I think it fits really well into the shape of the pick and is nice and easy to read.

Below is some developments I made with the logos. I have chosen this font as it reminds me of very 80's/90's metal album fonts. I have also spaced out the word 'metal' to give it a bit of a flare to it.

Plumtree

Jamie, good observations about your prelim and well done for noticing how little blank space there in in the music magazine. Keep this in mind as you move on to your project and how it will inform your own front cover, contents and double page spread.

Prelim Task Evaluation

Preliminary Task Evaluation

  • Did you plan your magazine? If not, what have you learnt about the importance of research and planning?
I did not plan my layout for my magazine, however I did do a lot of research on a magazine and it’s conventions on the front cover, contents page and a double page spread. The importance of research is evident as there are a lot of things that need to be included in the layout of both the front cover and contents. There are quite a few details that are essential throughout the entire magazine so research is vital to create a good magazine.

  • What technology did you use to complete the task and how did you use it?
I used a variety of programmes to present my research and to create my own magazine. I used, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, Prezi and Serif Photoplus X8. I used PowerPoint, Publisher and Prezi to present my research as I could use these programmes to insert images and easily annotate them with my analysis. I used Photoplus X8 to create my magazine as it is an image and text manipulation programme which allowed to crop images, create backgrounds and easily place text.

  • Did you encounter any difficulties? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?
I didn’t really encounter any problems.

  • How successful was your magazine? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would improve/do differently?
My magazine was fairly successful as I managed to incorporate most of the conventions of other magazines. I believe that to make it better I need to refine my techniques and my designing as it does look quite basic.

  • What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing the rest of your foundation coursework, do you think?
I have learnt from this task that everything that is included on a music magazine, or any magazine, is that it is on there for a reason for the reader to look at and interpret. I have also learnt that with every magazine there are conventions that are essential in making it successful which also all work together congruently.
